Raise your hand if you have spent countless hours playing Call of Duty or anything other online multiplayer game. OK, now put them down, you look silly. These and other similar experiences happen frequently enough that it is quite difficulty to distinguish one game play session from the next. How many games have you played that actually made you stop and create a personal space in your memory banks just to you can recall it at will? I am sure that you all probably have one in mind and are reliving fond memories as I speak,er…type. This is what separates game play sessions from game play experiences. Now this was a very slow week for the social community as it is the last week before vacation ends and we all return to the hum drum life that we all know and love oh so much. There will be one quote followed by an anecdote from myself. Hope you all enjoy my own personal memorable gaming experience.
Facebook- Sabrina Thomson- “ Playing live Halo 4, 8 vs 8 slayer. And after I had been killed 3 times I had enough. Ended up finding a sniper rifle and a little area and just starting sniping anything that came over the hill that wasn’t my team. Needless to say after about 9 straight kills in about 3 mins the entire opposing team was after me while my team protected me and I just cleared house. 10 mins go by and I have the most kills and highest score.”.
Now I have to admit, that experience was an epic in-game session and I know we can all share stories much like that one. The experience I want to share however is a gameplay experience that was also one of the best and most memorable days I have ever had.
It was a cold December morning and the latest entry in the Time Splitters franchise,Time Splitters 2 had just been releases. For some reason my brother and I felt it would be best to purchase this title at our local Toys ‘R Us. Don’t ask me why, kids do silly things. Any way, as soon as we get in the car we tear open the packaging as I read the instructional booklet and my brother reads the game box. Remember when video games came with booklets? I feel old! But I digress. We trade off reading both items on the car ride home in anticipation of playing the game and soaking it all in. We arrive home and pop the disc in. This is when the greatest gaming experience of my life happened. My brother and I spent the next 24 whole hours glued to the multiplayer. This was completely out of the norm for us, but we just could not help it. Have you played Time Splitters 2? It’s freakin awesome!
We start our gaming session by just dabbling with the multiplayer. We were not really sure what we were getting ourselves into. Two hours passed and the Hot Pockets and Mountain Dew(not specifically those food items, but what else do gamers eat?) came knocking. Well, actually that was just my mother asking if we wanted food, but you get the idea. A few mores hours passed as friends come to visit to check out the new game. It all of sudden became way passed out bedtimes as we had friends sneaking out of the house way passed 10pm. I like to live dangerously. I don’t even know if our eyes had turned that blood red color by the time it reached 2.Am, but I was not so sure that I could play for much longer. As I continue to play while my brother takes a bathroom break I feel myself dozing. All of a sudden in the corner of my eye I see the most beautiful sight that one could possibly see at the very moment. My brother brings in the entire bottle of mountain Dew and a full size bag of whatever crap was popular to eat at that time. Probably some gamer dude bro chips or something. I instantly get my second wind, or was it more like my eighth? We continue until the sun rises and our parents wake for work. Luckily for us, it was Winter recess so we just kept on playing. It wasn’t until about mid day that my brother and I felt an uneasiness all around. Maybe it was the lack of sleep or maybe it was all the eXtreme! Mountain Dew, but it was time to call it quits. Satisfied that we made it at least 24 hours straight, we smile at each other as sort of a nod that we had accomplished something great that day. And in that day my brother and I became even closer sharing inside jokes and just bonding for twenty four hours. This was something that I will never forget, but there is one downside to all if this. To this day I still can’t even look a Hot Pocket square in the eyes. A small price to pay for my most memorable gaming experience of all time.
Remember, What’s the Word is a weekly article that I write and have the social community contribute. Of you would like to participate and have your name and quote in next weeks article add me on twitter at bobbomb or Facebook at Robert Sparacino. Until next time….
